Diamonds have their weight and therefore their size expressed in carats. The carat is a unit of mass equal to 200 milligrams (0.007055 oz). One carat is divided into 100 "points" so that a diamond of 25 points is described as quarter of a carat or 0.25 carats.
Diamonds as with all gemstones and pearls have their weight measured in carats.
The term carat has its origin in the the seed of the Carob fruit which was believed to have a particularly uniform weight for its seed and therefore the weight of one of its seeds became the standard measure for one unit or carat. A recent study found carob seeds to have as much variation in their weights as many other seeds.
It should be noted that gemstone carat weight is not the same as or should be confused with gold alloy measurement of purity gold carat.
Diamond size is the most obvious factor in determining the value of a diamond but two diamonds of equal size can have very different values on their quality. Diamonds of high quality can be found in all size ranges.
Below is diagram that shows the example approximate sizes of brilliant round cut diamonds in a varying increasing scale of diamond carat weights.
